Plumb Design to Present Paper at Museums and the Web Conference
New York, March 9, 2001—Drawing from its extensive background in building museum applications, Plumb Design will present a paper at this year's Museums and the Web conference, taking place at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers from March 14-17. The paper was written and is being presented by Michael Freedman, Chief Business Development Officer of Plumb Design, and was co-written by Diane Andolsek of Experience Music Project (EMP). It describes the collaboration between Plumb Design and EMP on the EMP Digital Collection, which lets users explore, virtually, hundreds of artifacts from EMP's collection of rock and roll memorabilia. The EMP Digital Collection is available via EMP's Web site ( and via onsite kiosks within the museum.
The paper, entitled "Artifact as Inspiration," describes how the museum and Plumb Design used EMP's existing collections and management systems to take advantage of the unique possibilities engendered by Web-based technologies. It also explains how the two teams partnered to develop a mode of interactive storytelling that invigorates the museum experience for visitors and extends that experience onto the Web, without requiring EMP to replace its legacy system or add staff.
Mr. Freedman will be presenting the paper on Friday, March 16, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the mini-workshop "New Narrative Structures from Old Data." The paper is available on the Museums and the Web 2001 conference Web site at
Plumb Design will also have a booth in the conference's exhibit hall (#13), where there will be a representative to talk about the company's expertise in building engaging and educational Web- and kiosk-based exhibits.
